From Peel to Potential: Valoric and HAN BioCentre Explore the Hidden Value of Banana Waste
Most banana peels end up in the organic waste bin — but what if they could be turned into something valuable? Together with the HAN BioCentre, Valoric BV recently completed an innovative research project exploring how useful thickening agents can be extracted from discarded banana peels.
A Sustainable Idea Takes Shape
Three years ago, Valoric founder [Founder’s Name] approached HAN BioCentre with a simple question: Can we do more with banana peels? Having learned how many valuable components are hidden inside banana waste — and how much of it is thrown away daily — he saw both a problem and an opportunity.
The idea fit perfectly with the BioCentre’s focus on biorefinery and circular innovation. Together, Valoric and the research team began exploring how pectin, a natural thickening agent found in fruit, could be efficiently extracted from banana peels.
Challenges in the Lab
Extracting pectin isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. To qualify as true pectin, the extract must contain at least 65% galacturonic acid, the compound that gives pectin its thickening properties.
Researchers tested many variables — from the ripeness of bananas to extraction temperatures and storage conditions. Ultimately, they succeeded in finding the optimal process parameters, but the purity level reached just above 50% galacturonic acid.
Although the threshold wasn’t fully achieved, the project offered valuable scientific insights and laid the groundwork for future development.
Research Success, Business Challenge
While the HAN BioCentre considers the project a research success, Valoric sees it as a first step toward commercial application. “Of course, we hoped to immediately reach market-ready results,” says [Founder’s Name], “but innovation takes time. This research confirmed the potential — and showed us exactly where to focus next.”
Looking Ahead
For now, Valoric is exploring new directions and partnerships to refine the process further. The knowledge gained will continue to contribute to broader biorefinery research and to Valoric’s mission: turning waste into worth.
Banana peels could one day become a source not just of pectin, but of bioplastics, microbial oils, and other sustainable raw materials. As the project shows — when you look closer, even waste can hold surprising value.
